SAN FRANCISCO -- The Cubby Creatures are today announcing the planned departure of guitar-playing vocalist Jol and the reinvention of the band as a five-piece.

With the Rodent Records release of the as-yet-untitled Kathy Barra EP just weeks away, the move is part of a creative renaissance that promises to take the band and the cubby project in bold new directions.

"Jol leaving the Cubby Creatures is tragic and unfortunate, but also ultimately a good thing," says bass player Brian Weaver.  Asked whether he still likes Jol, Brian says yes.

Jol says he hopes to continue creating music, art and what he calls "a cubby reality," adding that, "the Cubby Creatures was originally conceived as an open project, like a Plastic Ono thing where anybody could jump in and do their thing. At the same time, there was the desire to have a core group that kept in practice and played out regularly. And beyond the band, there's the whole cubby universe. So 'leaving the band' doesn't have the same implications it might have had in past band paradigms, like, say, in 'Spinal Tap'.  Instead, it's just like leaving one job and getting transferred to, like, the Special Projects division of the same company, if you can excuse the corporate analogy."

"And on the metaphysical front, of course, everyone is a cubby creature," Jol continues. "The point is anything can happen. The windows are open and there's really no limit to what creatively might happen at this point."

Jol and his significant codependent nico plan to move to new york together in the fall, where Jol plans to "enjoy life and be happy and hopefully make the acquaintance of kelly ripa." Asked how he responds to the criticism that he's like the yoko ono who's taken jol away from the band, nico says, "I hadn't heard any such thing."  When told that it was probably jol who thought up that idea, he replies, "I wouldn't doubt it."

The new lineup will give its first show at the Cement Beach Guerilla Rock Fest on Saturday, August 11.  Jol is scheduled to make his farewell appearance with the Cubby Creatures at the Embryo show, which happens at the Vulcan Studios in Oakland on September 22nd.
