SAN FRANCISCO -- Finding a space to throw a rock show in the city is as tricky as finding affordable housing. At least that's how it must seem to Brian Weaver right now.

The Cubby Creature/Andy Peters Show/Go-Go Galaxion bass player and spearhead of the Embryo series of underground rock compilations has spent months collecting and putting together some of the most interesting material to emerge from the San Francisco musical underworld in the last two years.

The result, the Embryo.Compilation:03 compact disc, will be ready for release this summer.

But there's a complication: nowhere to release it.

Traditionally, the Embryo is born in a giant public spectacle, during which the various bands and miscellaneous projects represented on the compilation come together for an hours-long performance and celebration of the creative force that surges through them and binds them together as comrades.

"The Embryo show is nothing short of a birth rite. It's profound and sacred and cathartic for everyone involved," said Cubby Creatures publicist Roderick Hairbrux, in a press release from yesterday which he classified as "urgent."

But in the press release, Hairbrux also detailed the difficult time that Brian Weaver has had in finding a space for the event. "He has exhausted his options. And as of now, there is no space."

In 1999, the Embryo.2 event took place at the Crucible Steel Gallery, but this year the space's heavy bookings and increased price tag have made securing the space more difficult. While negotiations with the Cell are ongoing, nothing is certain, and the Embryo remains without a birthplace--and without a birthday.

"He needs it big and he needs it cheap," quipped Hairbrux, of Weaver's specifications for the space.
