SAN FRANCISCO -- The greater Cubby collective has announced the completion of its 12th Missalette, entitled
"The Missalette of Fortune." The theme of fortune is the brainchild of Cubby drummer
Jason Gonzales, who served as editor-in-chief of the Cubby's latest zine. When asked why he
decided upon the subject of fortune, Gonzales reported "...One day [my girlfriend] bought a bunch
of fortune cookies, which, besides looking at the fortunes, I like to eat. After eating about
ten of them, I found myself with all these fortunes. Basically, as I looked at them scattered
on the table, the theme and then the cover idea came to me." The cover of the most recent
Missalette consists of a map of constellations with a collage of fortunes from fortune cookies
on top. The Cubby Creatures held a release party for Missalette 12 this last Sunday at the swank San Francisco venue Café du Nord. After three months of not playing any live shows, The Cubby Creatures were surprised that the show was only modestly attended despite playing with their more nationally well-known friends from Portland, Minmae, and announcing that they would be giving the new Missalette away for free. Though The Cubby Creatures had not played live in three months, they had been meeting regularly at their rehearsal space. This was evident at the show by their 'tight' set, as described by an anonymous audience member, and introduction of two new songs "The Wallet" and "Cubby On (You Crazy Gay)." Though the show was only modestly attended, the Cubbys considered it a grand success because of how much fun they had. Missalette #12 is also available online on the Cubby Web site, Cubby.net. Cubby bassist Brian Weaver reportedly spent "100 hours" developing the online version of Cubby Missalette #12. When asked why it took him so long, he responded "Because I don¹t know what I'm doing." The online version apparently has some new articles that did not appear in the print version, as well as a specific sub-theme of fortune, which Weaver describes as "inspired by astrology with each constellation representing a submission, all revolving around the sun, like the 12 disciples hovering around Jesus, or something like that." Cubby Missalette #12 is available at selected record stores, cafes and bookstores in the Bay Area, and the online Missalette of fortune can be viewed in the "Missalette" area of Cubby.net. |
